Music is my life, it is like breathing!

Sonia Genú, mezzo soprano, graduated in voice and piano by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with vocal extension studies in the Netherlands, is an eclectic and experienced artist.

The Brazilian-Dutch singer was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has lived in the Netherlands since 1991.

Graduated with a gold medal in voice from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Sonia Genú has been described by critics in Brazil as one of the most expressive vocalists of her generation.

She debuted in 1986, in the role of Cherubino, in the opera “Le Nozze di Figaro” by Mozart and expanded her career as soloist acting in operas, oratoria and biennales of contemporary music in important concert halls of Brazil.

In the Netherlands, Sonia Genú has been active as a vocal teacher and concert performer.

In Europe, together with the Brazilian pianist Tadeu Duarte, she created the project “A Canção Brasileira” aimed at promoting and sharing the vocal works of Brazilian classical composers.

Sonia Genú has taught at Codarts – the Rotterdam Conservatory; the SKVR Music School in Rotterdam and was a Vocal Coach for flutists at the renowned International James Galway Flute Masterclass in Switzerland.
